Fire Services Under Pressure
Drastic funding cuts put pressure on fire services
Fire Stations are facing closure and fire prevention programmes the axe as funding cuts threaten to prove a “double edged sword” according to one of Yorkshire’s top officers.
Jamie Courtney, South Yorkshire chief fire officer warned there would be severe consequences if six metropolitan forces – South and West Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and West Midlands - are hit with deeper cuts than in other areas over the next two years. It is believed cuts to their budgets from 2011 to 2013 are already double those inflicted on other forces. Mr Courtney’s own force, South Yorkshire, faces budget cuts of £4.7m over the next two years, with fears the total could top £8m over the following two years.
These Metropolitan areas, often called on to respond to major regional or national incidents, have been particularly hard hit because Government funding makes up a bigger proportion of their overall spending, meaning any central cuts have a bigger impact. fire damage
