Flood damage warning system criticised after rain

A new flood damage warning system in Louth, Lincolnshire has been criticised after heavy rain hit the town.

Local newspaper the Louth Target has reported that some residents living near the River Lud did not receive a flood damage warning on Sunday April 29 after heavy rain. The alert should have been put out when officials spotted the river rapidly increasing.

Cockermouth group given money towards flood damage defences

Cockermouth flood action group has received £100,000 to put towards flood damage defences in the town.

The flood damage defence money was pledged some time ago but has only now been received from the Cumbria flood recovery fund, which was initially set up after extensive flooding locally in 2009.

East Riding hall wins brick restoration grant

Yorkshire Council has announced that it has received a grant to be put towards a brick restoration project at Sewerby Hall.

The grant of £949,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will partly fund the £2.6m project planned for interior and brick restoration at the Hall. The work, expected to take two and a half years to complete, will return the Grade I building to how it would have looked in 1900.

Essex merchant house brick restoration complete

Brick restoration work to a 500 year old building in Coggeshall, Essex has been completed.

Paycocke’s House has undergone a £187,000 brick restoration project to renovate the Grade I building.

Gower flood damage alert still in place

One flood damage warning is still in place today in the Swansea area of South Wales.

The Environment Agency have warned that flood damage may be possible along the Swansea Bay and Gower coastline after predictions of high tides. The alert is in place between Pontardulais and Llantwit Major.

Scotland couple escape fire damage

A couple from Pollokshields have escaped injury after a serious incident of fire damage was started outside their home at 4pm on Friday 4 May.

A 43 year old man and his 28 year old partner were at home in the flat on St Andrews Drive when the fire damage began. The couple saw the smoke in the hall and made a lucky escape onto the balcony.

Yorkshire will suffer yet more rainfall and resulting flood damage next week. Weather forecasters have predicted heavy downpours in the county while the Environment Agency is expected to issue more severe weather warnings across the country.

Penrith castle to reopen after brick restoration

Lowther Castle, near Penrith, Cumbria is to reopen after a £9 million brick restoration project to the building.

The Gothic style building was built in 1805 but has been sitting empty since the 1950s. It is intended that the brick restoration project will turn the castle into a tourist attraction. Lowther Castle and Gardens Trust, the charity behind the work, expects Lowther Castle to attract 100,000 visitors a year.
