Govt pledges £2m for flood damage risk assessment
A pot of £2 million has been set aside to help local authorities assess areas at risk of flood damage.
30 July 2010
The government has pledged £2 million to help local authorities deal with flood damage risk assessments, as part of a package of measures to help prevent and manage future disasters.
Environment minister Richard Benyon said that the additional funding will help local authorities identify areas where there is a significantly high risk of flooding and where maps and action plans are required.
He explained that dealing with flooding is "a matter that this government takes very seriously", with the recently published Structural Reform Plan committing the administration to implementing the findings of the Pitt Review to improve flood defences.
"Local authorities clearly have a vital role in managing flood risk and we aim to give them all the support we can, not only through funding for defences, but also by providing guidance on planning for a flood and training for staff," Mr Benyon stated.
Meanwhile, funding to protect homes in Reading from the risk of flood damage has been cut after Wokingham Borough Council revealed that a sum which was due to be spent on shoring up river banks in the area will now be redistributed across other departments.
