A burst pipe in a mill shopping complex flooded the entire ground floor, The Lancaster Telegraph report.

The Ena Mill, in Atherton was badly damaged after the flood wiped out the entire ground floor and large areas of the first floor.

The extent of the damage will entail a vast amount of water damage restoration to the complex. The restoration work could run into six figures.

It is predicted that cold weather caused the sprinkler pipe to burst causing the water to leak into the Grade II listed building.

It has been reported that the water was as deep as three inches in some places.

As well as the water damage to the mill, thousands of pounds worth of stock – which includes fashion and homeware – has been ruined.

Simon Yates, from Ena Mill said the flood has caused major disruption to the retail outlet after hundreds of consumers had to be turned away at the weekend.

He added: “All we can think about is getting everything cleaned up and reopen as soon as possible. Our lives are on hold until we do.”

A Cricket Club in Buckinghamshire will have to undergo extensive water damage restoration work after flooding.

The Witchell Pavilion at Wendover Cricket Club suffered thousands of pounds worth of water damage after a pipe burst on the Friday night.

The Club will have to have a new ceiling and carpets after the damage was assessed, The Bucks Herald report.

Bookings secretary Bill Brow said the damage and disturbance it has caused is vast. It is the second time the club has been flooded in as many years.

Backlash came from locals who criticised the management of the club for not carrying out routine checks after it happened two years ago.

The club has come to a standstill, having to wait for their insurance company to inspect the building.

Of the disruption he says, “It is a setback. We have bridge nights there twice a week and it is used for private bookings”.

Despite statements of record low rainfall this winter, water firm Severn Trent predicts no hosepipe bans, the BBC can report.

Although the firm are reassuring that there will be no bans or usage restrictions, they will urge the public to lower consumption levels.

A spokeswoman from the firm says:

“Obviously we’re keeping an eye on the situation and it does depend on the weather but there’s loads of things our customers can do just by using water sensibly.

“Little things like turning off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth and knocking a minute off your shower.”

Severn Trent are also on course to meet its 2011/12 leakage target. They underline water damage as a contributing factor to the over-consumption of water.

The firm highlights environmental and social concerns for paying for water damage restoration work on domestic small-scale leaks.

Don’t let the unpredictability of the winter weather in 2012 leave you unprepared for extreme conditions and the damage and disruption that this will cause you and your business.

With the Met office uncertain of coming forecasts – predicting both colder and milder weather for February - we don’t want you to be caught out.

At The Ideal Group, we pride ourselves as being responsible to help you prepare for the worst. We want to eliminate any unwanted surprises, and supply you with top tips in the event of an emergency. As a reputable emergency response and disaster recovery organisation we have valuable insights, not only to help you after a disaster has struck, but also to inform you how you can reduce the risk.

The 2011 figures released from the Association of British Insurers, have informed us that over £900 million was given out in property damage claims as a direct result of freezing weather conditions. More difficult to measure is the disruption caused by the damage.

So, we urge you to reduce risk and impact of a disaster by planning ahead. The Ideal Group’s six top tips to protect your business against the cold weather this winter are:

Make sure all employees know where you main stopcock is and what to do in the event of a burst pipe, water leak or flood.

Have a list of emergency contacts and make sure all staff know where to find it. Ideal’s 24/7 emergency helpline is 08082316760.

In the event of a flood warning, move important items to upper floors, or place them on tables to keep them out of reach of flood waters. Move important paperwork to a safe place and make sure all computers are backed up.

After an emergency, ensure electrical main supplies are turned off. all power and gas supplies are turned off. Remember that flood waters may be contaminated, so avoid contact with them.

If you do have to leave your property for any length of time, ensure your premises is secure to deter looters. Lock up properly and take away as many valuable items as you can.

Before re-entering your property, first check it is safe to enter. Your building may look safe, but large amounts of water can damage its structure, and you could be at risk of an electric shock if the mains electricity is still running.

Make sure your Business Continuity Plan is up to date. If you don’t have one speak to the Ideal Group today for advice.

In February 2012, leading disaster response company, The Ideal Group UK, celebrates 10 years in business.

In 2002, founder Javid Ibrahim, transformed the company from a domestic cleaning business to a retail contractor, securing work with Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, and Pizza Hut.

As part of natural growth, The Ideal Group developed its services and began working in the construction industry. Not content to rest on their laurels, the company has gone on to introduce fire and flood emergency services to the company’s stable of services, along with restoration work.

The Ideal Group has always prided itself on being a leader in its field and it was this ethos that lead to the company being forerunners in the adoption of new rapid drying technology. Ideal invested in this technology as soon as it was introduced in the UK, in 2007.

The investment paid off during the nationwide floods of that year, when The Ideal Group worked tirelessly on rapid drying programmes in Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Sheffield, Hull and elsewhere.

From the start, The Ideal Group UK has lived by the philosophy “to under promise and over deliver”. 10 years on this is still true and the company continues to invest in state of the art technology that allows it to continue leading the way as a reputable emergency response, disaster recovery, and environmental management and property restoration service.

Water-related damage costs the Insurance Industry £730million per annum, The Express reports.

Water damage is said to cost the Insurance Industry more than double than that for Burglary claims.

Small-scale pipe and shower leaks of are reported to cost more yearly than large-scale burst pipes and ruptures.

Water pipe damage accounts for 35 per cent of claims, with leaky showers accounting for 10 per cent.

It is reported by Legal & General’s Stop The Drop that the increasing cost of claims for water leaks is adding over £50 to every household insurance policy in the UK.

Insurers urge householders to carry out routine maintenance checks. These checks would also reduce the risk of having to have post-disaster water damage restoration to properties.

The Ideal Group offers Leak Detection Services. Hidden leaks in mains water or heating pipe systems can cause a lot of damage if they remain undetected.

Vandals rupture water pipe after breaking into flats.

A multi-story block of flats became victim to extreme water damage as vandals broke a water pipe.

The block of flats, based in Northview Court, Edinburgh, became badly flooded.

Deadline news reports that the main water pipe was ruptured on the eighth floor at approximately 8pm.

Although the extent of the damage is unknown, it is reported that the eighth floor landing and some of the flats below will be in dire need of water damage restoration work.

It was not until the fire service arrived at the scene that the water was turned off.

A police spokesman said: “This mindless act of destruction has caused significant water damage to the properties below the eighth floor and we are eager to hear from any residents or witnesses who can help us identify those responsible.

“Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in or around Northview Court yesterday evening is asked to contact police immediately.”

Riot Claims Unsettled

Six months on and the bulk of outstanding riot claims are for large commercial businesses.

The Association of British Insurers issued an update 6 months after the summer riots.

The update demonstrates the progress insurance claims managers have made in settling claims associated with the London riots.

The riots caused millions of pounds of damage in London and across the country, the aftermath being an extreme surge in insurance claims.

The ABI report that the majority of smaller property damage claims for homes and smaller businesses have already been settled.

Left outstanding are the larger claims from bigger business – which by their nature are more complex for the insurance claims management teams to process. It is also reported that the complex commercial claims, such as business interruption, take longer to settle.

Many of the sites of these large businesses were designated crime scenes. This meant the insurance assessors access the site was significantly delayed, which of course had a knock on effect to how quickly claims could go through.

Some buildings affected by fire damage also require local authorities to make planning decisions about the rebuilding or extreme restoration plans, another process that will indeed take time.

It is understood that businesses had suffered the most from the 2011 riots, the vast quantity of claims alone can account for the percentage of business claims that are still outstanding.
