Top 10 ways to Reduce Allergens in the Home
Suffering from allergies triggered by dust mites can be extremely difficult at the best of times; however, there are a number of things you can do to reduce the levels of allergens entering the air you breathe in your home.
- Have carpets, upholstered furniture, area rugs, curtains and mattresses professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Where possible use both dry-steam and vacuuming to further reduce allergens contained in carpets.
- Dust furniture with a damp cloth and regularly rinse it out - never use a dry duster as you will put dust into the air.
- Clean and dry window frames and sills regularly.
- Clean ceiling fans and light fixtures at least monthly.
- Use washable ‘Barrier Mats’ at doors to catch dust, pollen and soil and wash at least every month.
- Use both dry steam cleaning plus vacuuming cleaning each reduced allergen levels in upholstered furniture.
- Damp mop hard surface floors at least every week.
- Wash household bedding each week in high temperatures to kill off dust mites.
- Dry clothes indoors to avoid bringing in outdoor pollens and moulds. Be sure your clothes drier is correctly vented outdoors.
- Dehumidify the air. Dust mites thrive in humidity levels above 50 percent. Reduce humidity levels to between 30-50 percent with a dehumidifier.
